Volunteers

Deborah, Rocky & TamsinVolunteers are the heroes behind the story of BSVAC’s success.

As a volunteer organization, BSVAC depends on volunteers to dispatch calls, ride the ambulance, and ensure that the ambulance and medical equipment meet the rigorous requirements under which NYS volunteer ambulance corps operate.  BSVAC also depends on volunteers for many other functions, including bookkeeping, clerical and administrative assistance, and cleaning and maintaining BSVAC’s headquarters.

Volunteers who ride the ambulance and provide patient care must meet training and certification requirements.  They must apply for membership and must follow BSVAC operating procedures and policies, including performing regular service and attending required meetings.

If you would like to volunteer -- whether to ride the ambulance or to help out at headquarters – call BSVAC at (718) 453-4617.

Jason DurantOne of our most dedicated and loyal members, Jason Durant has completed our Medic First Aid (including CPR) training and become certified. Jason worked very hard to successfully complete his training. We depend on Jason for assistance with ambulance disinfecting, medical supply inventory and equipment maintenance. We are all extremely proud of Jason.

The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BSVAC), the nation’s first minority-run volunteer ambulance corps, was founded in 1988 by two EMS workers, Captain James "Rocky" Robinson and Specialist Joe Perez.  BSVAC has greatly improved emergency care in the Bed-Stuy community and trained countless youngsters and adults in life-saving skills.
